Terrible Audio Narration, ‘just okay’ story

2 stars

I listened to this book in Audible because it wasn’t available through Libby. (I know, I’m ashamed). The narrator was TERRIBLE!!! Worse voice imaginable. The writing of this book was redundant too, a lot of repeated words to describe things that had me rolling my eyes at parts. The story was okay, but it could have been so much better. It had so much potential, especially to me as a Giraffe lover! Worst book I’ve read all year. Not the worst book of all time though. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT listen to the audio recording of this book if you decide to read it.

Masterpiece! Great politics.

5 stars

I loved this!! I really enjoyed reading this book, it kept me engaged the whole time. I thought it had excellent political/social dynamics and its twists and turns never failed to surprise me. The only part I didn’t like is that much of the book’s climax and game changing plot points happen in the last 200 pages. I will definitely read the next book in this series. I can’t stop thinking about this book!

Nice Guide to reflect upon

4 stars

This was a nice guide to reflect on, about how you can incorporate Jesuit values in a day to day life. I felt it to be comprehensive (and maybe a little too technical at times). So, the only reason I give it 4 out of 5 is that I feel like I will have to return to it to follow the examen and prayer instructions. But it was really nice, and I imagine myself actually returning to it to follow the examen and his tips for it.

Mind Blowing

5 stars

It is hard to believe that something so embedded in life on earth is something so mysterious! I have lived on this earth 26 years and did not know almost anything this book discussed. It was an amazing book, and a bite sized introduction into mycology. Loved it!

Thought Provoking but a Task to Read

3 stars

I read this for a book club, so especially tried to read closely and take notes. The book had an interesting structure with multiple characters that you get to know well. To me the book unfortunately started to drag about halfway through. Lots of action but very detailed, so it required intense focus to read. The book really made me think, so I am glad I read it, though I think if it weren’t for the book club I may not have finished this one because it was hard to casually pick up and get excited about. It is very thought provoking with a clear message.

Thought Provoking… but I have some notes

3 stars

I am very glad to have listened to this book because the author has an entertaining speaking style. (She’s also a BBC historian). Many of the chapters were very interesting to me because the famous women she discusses are less often discussed than their male counterparts. But , that was perhaps the main issue I had with it… I feel like as much as she tried to incorporate information on regular women, she often referred back to those of privilege, or royals. I am not trying to undermine the significance of these women, but it is something that caught me as a potential downside to this book. Interestingly I found chapter 4 about artists and patrons to be a bit boring, and I think this is the chapter that was supposed to revolve around the artwork: and I am an art historian! So, I liked it some parts more than …

Entertaining

4 stars

This was a good book! I enjoyed reading it. Though at parts I thought it was a bit too long (but that could partly be because it too so long for me to read it and also because of world building.) the ending was the best part and it really really made me want to read the sequel soon! I’m hoping the next book has more action and less build-up. 4 stars because it was missing something for me to call it amazing, but it was a very good book nonetheless.
