Read Ben Philippe!!!

4 stars

I was already familiar with Ben Philippe from his first book, the excellent "The Field Guide to the North American Teenager", and this makes a good complement (despite different settings).

Ben knows how to fucking Punch you in the gut or dick or whatever. Obviously you need conflict for 95% of stories, but it's basically seeing characters reaping what they sow, and you've become attached to them.

At least in this one.

Field Guide (not to go into it too much) was very different because to be frank the main character is an Asshole. Henri is definitely not an asshole, though he's very much a fuckboy.

It's hard not to love Henri, and I think it's crucial. Obviously you should have empathy for protagonists in books, but I'm more saying, if you cannot understand where Henri is coming from when he does a massive fuck-up, you will have a very …

Queer revolutions!

No rating

Okay, there are two viewpoint characters. One of them is blatantly asexual (but not aro) the other I THINK is supposed to be read as Aro but not asexual. I'm not entirely certain.

There's a prominent trans man in the book, and a lot of lesbians.

I'm not really going to go into details, because to be frank with you, I had a hard time following this book at times, I think because of problems in my own life right now. Very much I want to be clear, I had this problem with another book I read at the same time so it's ME not the book.

But the basic gist is a binary magic system that is actually a spectrum, and while actually magic, is also a metaphor for gender.

And there's a revolution, as you may have guessed from the title.

Good for Greek Mythology fans and Classics majors

4 stars

When I first read this book I had NO idea that it was a series. I will say it ends on a cliffhanger, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next one.

The premise is an adopted black girl from Brooklyn learns she's heir to a house and duty: an apothecary for the townsfolk. And that her magic powers with plants and immunity to poisons is traced through her lineage.

Her adopted family is so sweet and supportive. Her love interest is a bit different than I'm used to, but not necessarily in a bad way.

This goes deep into Greek Mythology and plays, and does its own plausible interpretation. Also the book was very clear that Achilles was more than friends with his BFF Patroclus, so it gets points for that alone.

This has a wonderful voice, and I feel a little guilty giving it only 4 stars. I'll probably bump …

I had never read Holly Black before this book, but with it, it's quite easy to see why she's so beloved.

I love how complicated all the characters are, even the adults.

N. K. Jemisin is a genius, but I think you already knew that

4 stars

The worldbuilding in this is so lush, and the voices so great. Sieh was obviously my favorite character (Because Sieh is the best) though it's not like there was any narrator I particularly disliked.

There were certain parts I could tell Jemisin just loved writing, I don't know how to put it. Like, the narration in the Shrill novella, while I bet it was difficult to write, I sort of felt like she had a good time?

While I think I would recommend starting Jemisin through her short stories instead of a 1700 monolith, you do you. This is great.
