Whilst it was fun to return to a Follett for the end of the year, A Place called Freedom unfortunately left a mixed impression. The book starts great, introducing interesting characters and situations, as expected with Follett. The writing style makes it hard to put the book down. However, unfortunately many story lines feel rushed, and especially the last part felt like the editor told the author to delete a couple of thousand words. There was material enough in here to write a sequel... So, all in all 3/5 ain't bad.

Quite a nice premise, but after two chapters it becomes quite shallow. Whilst up to date to mid-2019 in events, it fails to discuss any geopolitical developments outside 19th-century empire-politics. The effects of climate change, economical developments, digitization etc which have been of utmost importance in the 201x’s are barely addressed.
